Gerund কাকে বলে?

Verb এর Present form এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয়ে যদি তা একই সাথে Noun ও Verb এর কাজ করে তাকে gerund বলে

যেমনঃ

• • Walking is a good exercise.

 

এ বাক্যে walking হল একটি verb কারণ এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয়েছে আবার এটি একটি noun কারণ এটি noun এর ম subject হিসেবে বসেছে।

এখন যেহেতু walking শব্দটি verb ও noun উভয় কে নির্দেশ করছে সেহেতু এটি একটি gerund এর কাজ করছে।

➡️Gerund এর ব্যবহার

✔️Verb এর subject হিসাবে gerund বসে।

যেমন:

• • Fishing is my favorite hobby.
  • Swimming is good for health.

 

✔️Transitive verb এর object হিসাবে gerund বসে।

যেমন:

• • I enjoyed boating.
  • I enjoyed walking.

 

✔️Preposition এর object হিসাবে gerund বসে।

যেমন:

• • I am fond of fishing.
  • He is fond of sleeping.

 

✔️Intransitive verb-এর complement হিসাবে gerund বসে।

যেমন:

• • My favorite hobby is fishing.
  • Seeing is believing.

 

✔️Possessive case (my, our, your, her, his, their) -এর পর gerund বসে।

যেমন:

• • I disagreed to his coming here.
  • We don’t support her working here.

 

✔️Gerund দ্বারা কোন কোন সময় compound noun গঠন করা হয়।

যেমনঃ

• • It is my reading room.

 

✔️Negative ও Interrogative বাক্যে mind-এর পর verbing বসে। 

যেমন:

• • Would you mind opening the door.

 

✔️Apposition হিসেবে gerund বসে।

যেমন:

• • The boy, being tall, got the job.

 

 

ব্যাখা: কোন noun এর অতিরিক্ত পরিচয় দেওয়ার জন্য যখন কোন শব্দ ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন উক্ত শব্দ সমূহকে apposition বলা হয় ।

যথা উপরের বাক্যে the boy হল subject. এর পর being tall শব্দগুলো boy-এর অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দিচ্ছে। তাই being ball হলো Apposition.

 

✍️Note : যদি Gerund এর পূর্বে The এবং পরে of বসে, তাকে Verbal Noun বলে।

যেমন:

• • The eating of a balanced diet is good for health.

 

✍️Note: মনে রাখতে হবে Verbal Noun শুধু Noun-এর কাজ করে।
